Between the 7th and 18th December 2009 the future of the Kyoto Protocol will be decided at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. The out come could pull us from the precipice and direct us towards a sustainable future. The question is, what can civil society do to help?
The solution is simple and anyone can do it: you don’t need money, technology or special skills. Just be quiet on Saturday 12 December, mid-way through the most important conferences in our common fate. For once, global civil society could speak with one voice. If we do, policy makers will certainly listen.
Imagine thousands and millions of people in parks, streets, offices, stores, trains and homes getting on with their days or gathering together in silence. This would be the most powerful way to communicate our shared expectation across languages, races, creeds, ages and all differences.
The alternative is cacophony. We need to send politicians a strong clear signal, not noise. To create such a signal, we have to act together. So join me, join others, act together on one day to protect what we have.
